Faint is a medical condition by virtue of which person suddenly become unconscious. In Medical terms it is referred as syncope. It should be considered to be a medical emergency. Stay away from the person and let him/her breathe. Fainting is usually temporary and typically caused by a lack of oxygen in the brain. There can be many reasons of brain oxygen deprivation including hypotension (low blood pressure).
Basic Causes of Fainting
- Fear or other emotional trauma
- Severe pain
- A sudden drop in blood pressure
- Low blood sugar due to diabetes or from going too long without eating
- Dehydration
- Standing in one position for too long
- Physical exertion in hot/cold temperatures
- Coughing too hard
- Straining during a bowel movement
- Drugs or alcohol consumption
Measures to be taken when someone Faints
- Encourage blood flow to their head by raising their feet above the level of their heart.
- Make the person sit with their head between their knees.
- Loosen tight collars, belts, or other tight clothing.
- Keep the person lying down or sitting for at least 10 to 15 minutes.
- A cool, quiet place is best.
- A cool drink of water should be provided.
