Early identification of the symptoms is undoubtedly a great way to fight Dengue, but still, the need for proper diagnostic tests cannot be ignored. As we know, the Dengue fever is caused by the infected mosquitoes, it is important to get it diagnosed well-in-time. The need to diagnose dengue fever becomes unavoidable on frequent arrival of high fever along with severe body pain. The reason for this health condition can be many, but getting clarity on the same is important so as to get the right treatment.

Elaborated below are the most commonly used diagnostic tests for Dengue:

  • The virus is isolated by serum sample collection from the patient's body. This is done within 5 days of the appearance of the Dengue symptoms. Followed by this, the serum is investigated for the presence of antibodies by Enzyme-linked Immunosorbent Assay.
  • Another way to diagnosing this infection is by using Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR). This is mainly adopted for detecting the viral genomic sequence from the Serum. If this doesn't seem possible, the samples for Cerebro Spinal Fluid are collected. This is a bit complicated and expensive way of diagnosing the Dengue infection.
  • If the problem is really complicated and beyond the scope of above-mentioned diagnostic methods, a tourniquet test is done. For the performance of this test, a tourniquet is attached to the arm of the patient and if the blood blotches appear beyond tourniquet, it can lead to increased bleeding. This kind of infection is known as Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever.
  • Another commonly used diagnostic test entails observing the platelet count. If the same falls below 100,000, it is a matter of concern because the decrease the normal count lies between 150,000 to 400,000.
  • Another observation to detect the presence of Dengue cells is the volume of hematocrit in the red blood cells. In the case of plasma leakage, there can be seen an increased fluid accumulation.
